In England, an unparished area is an area that is not covered by a civil parish. Most urban districts of England are either entirely or partly unparished. In some cases a largely rural district will have one or two unparished areas in it (such as in Shrewsbury and Atcham). Some unparished areas have Charter Trustees to maintain an historic charter, such as City status (an example being in Bath) or simply the mayoralty of a town.
Unparished areas were created in 1974 in areas that were formerly urban districts or municipal boroughs that did not become successor parishes. Parishes are not allowed in Greater London and so it is entirely unparished.
This is a list of unparished areas as they existed on April 1, 1974. Many parishes have been created since then.
